Big brother back in action?

The ‘big brother scenario’ was meant simply as a warning by George Orwell regarding the future in his beautiful novel nineteen eighty four. He described a future where the government observes a person’s every move, even his thoughts, making sure he keeps in line throughout his life… scary isn’t it? But with operation PRISM launched by the NSA, that’s exactly what we’re looking at. Leaked by the wistle blower Edward Snowden, the operation has direct access to servers of firms including Google, Apple and Facebook, and allows officials to collect material including search history, the content of emails, file transfers and live chats. The leaked information came to light one day after the revelation that the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court had been requiring the telecommunications company Verizon to turn over to the NSA logs tracking all of its customers’ telephone calls on an ongoing daily basis.

The Prism

The scale of the operation leaves you shaking in your boots doesn’t it? The U.S. government assures that the info is carefully guarded and restricted, but what truly scares me is that  how it prys into peoples lives like this could be just the first step. What’s more, Snowden is being hunted by the U.S. government on charges of espionage. Its a day and age when protecting people’s liberties comes second to consolidating Government power and the time has passed when we should ask ourselves: is the Big Brother truly back in action?
